Cirrus Transition Training Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you need transition training?

Cirrus aircraft differ from other general aviation aircraft most people are used to flying. These planes are referred to as “technologically advanced aircraft” or TAA’s. By definition, according to the FAA, TAA’s have at least a moving map display, an IFR approved GPS and an autopilot. Cirrus aircraft have all of this and much more. Just knowing how to operate all of the equipment properly is a lot to learn. Add to that the fact that you are going much faster than you are use to, and it can be a hand full to the improperly trained pilot. During Cirrus Transition Training you will not only learn how to use all of the systems on the aircraft you will learn what to do when they fail and how to have a safe outcome in any emergency situation. The Cirrus was designed to be the safest aircraft ever built, and with proper training it can be.

How do you get started flying in the Cirrus?

The first step is to order the Cirrus Transition Training Kit online for the appropriate aircraft you want to fly. This kit will include a Training Manual, Garmin 430 manuals and training CD, PFD Manual, MFD manual and a interactive training, “CATS” CD. Knowing how to work all of the functions of the Garmin 430 quickly and efficiently is very important during this training. If you have never used one of these or only used the most basic of functions, you should first spend a good deal of time on your own to get acquainted with the operation of these units. The training manual will have a workbook. This workbook is designed to get you knowledgeable with the aircraft and its systems. Much of the training you will receive will deal with systems malfunctions and emergencies. You will need to have a complete understanding of the systems prior to beginning the flight training portion in order to complete the course in a timely manner. You should come to your first lesson with the workbook completed. When you have that completed, it’s time to schedule your training and get started on the 8 lesson FITS course.

If I do the transition in the Avidyne equipped aircraft, can I then fly the Perspective?

No. Whether you do your initial transition in the Avidyne equipped aircraft or the Garmin Perspective aircraft, you will have to then be required to do “differences” training in order to fly the other aircraft in order to fly solo.

Should I do my transition in the SR-20 or the SR-22?

If your intention is to eventually fly the SR-22, you should do your transition in that. The SR-22 is a high performance aircraft and as such the insurance requirements for rental are different. You may as well build the time in type requirements while doing the transition. If you are initially signed off in the SR-22, you can easily be signed off in the 20 with only a short training flight. It does not work that way the other way around.

How can I fly the Turbo Cirrus?

You can do your initial training in the turbo, or after you have been signed off to fly the normally aspirated SR-22 you can then do the “turbo differences” training.
